Welcome Back from Dr. Croney

August 19, 2021

Dr. Sara L. CroneyWelcome Back From Dr. Croney!

The vision “Leader and Learners, Today and Tomorrow” sets our tone for the 2021-22 school year. We strived last year in all efforts to keep students in school, have all sports teams participate and still excelled for the most possible days. This year we are returning face-to-face, five days a week in grades Kindergarten through 12. At the writing of this newsletter, all sports seasons are starting on time.

Our emphasis this school year will be on assisting your student with any growth needed due to potential learning loss from last year. We will analyze student’s achievement scores, make adjustments and re-teach where necessary. Specific plans will be implemented to address any learning gaps from the 2021-20 school year.

The expectation, with Board affirmation on August 9th, is that face masks will be optional in grades 4K through12. However, face masks are again required on our school buses and vans due to an order from the U.S. Department of Education. We are following safety protocols including extra hand washing, disinfecting and social distancing where possible.

While online learning is available, our first priority is to have face-to-face learning, five days a week for grades Kindergarten through 12. Second, all of the class sizes are smaller at the elementary level to allow a better student-to-teacher ratio to allow for more individual attention to students’ needs. Third, we are moving to a “Reading Coach” model to assist all of our elementary teachers to address the need for student reading growth in grades 4K through 5. We are staffed with a Reading Specialist, a full-time reading teacher and now have three paraprofessional support staff to specifically assist with students who are not currently reading at their grade level.

The August staff development days will be fully utilized as our curriculum continues to be reviewed and updated. All elementary teachers will be receiving training on “Guided Reading and Daily 5 Reading Strategies.” We are also providing training for all new teachers in grades Kindergarten through 5 in our “Math Expressions” program and beginning in 2021-22 new social studies textbooks have been purchased for all grades Kindergarten through 12. Training for those materials will also be provided during the August staff development days.

The District is following through on our commitment to address mental health needs for our students. We are in the process of hiring a full-time guidance counselor to serve the elementary schools and middle school students. A Transitions Coordinator has been added to the staff at Northwestern High School who comes to the District with a strong background and experience as a social worker. Support and assistance will be provided to students (and parents/guardians) as they transition from mental health care and enter back into our schools as well as helping to navigate the paperwork to obtain mental health assistance from other providers if needed. This will allow any student that seeks help for, or has been identified with, anxiety,  depression or any other
mental health need to focus on their education in order to succeed and ultimately graduate.

We are very excited to roll out a one-to-one computing device program to all students in the fall of 2021. Each student will have access to a Chromebook (or Lenovo Duet tablet for Kindergarten and 1st grade) on a daily basis which will allow continued use of Google Classroom and other digital resources.

Last year we adopted three focus words to help get us through the pandemic: “nimble,” “flexible” and “gracious.” This year, our focus words are: “growth,” “achievement” and “accountability.” These words will apply to all learning and extra-curricular activities. Students will be required to show up, do their part, participate and turn in assignments. The days of repeated forgiveness for late assignments are over. As educators, we are striving for the best student achievement possible. In order to have that happen, we need the continued support of parents and guardians to say to your student, “Put the focus on school.”

Working Together for Achievement,

Dr. Sara L. Croney

2021 Reopening Plan

August 11, 2021

REOPENING AND CONTINUITY OF EDUCATION PLAN FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

The School District of Maple will reopen all schools for in-person learning, all day, five days a week.  An online option is available, but students are encouraged to attend school on-site.  As has been the practice, students and staff should stay home when sick and are encouraged to get tested. The School District of Maple has applied to work with a vendor to have rapid Covid-19 testing available on site for students and staff.

Social distancing is encouraged as much as possible (CDC recommends 3 feet).

The school meal program will be made available to both on-site and on-line students.

FACEMASKS

  1. Facemasks will be worn by drivers and students in all school transportation vehicles. (This is an order from the U.S. Department of Education.)

  2. Wearing facemasks during school and during extra and co-curricular activities is OPTIONAL.  However, we encourage those who have not been vaccinated to consider wearing facemasks.

QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS

  1. If a student/staff member is identified as a close contact at home, (outside the school) or a family member in the same household has tested positive for COVID-19, the student/staff member will be quarantined.

    1. A staff member or student would be allowed to attend work/school (with no symptoms) if exposed in the home with disclosure of receiving a COVID-19 vaccination. For students, parent permission is required to access the Wisconsin Immunization Registry or proof of COVID-19 immunization card.

    2. The student/staff member can take a COVID-19 test on days five (5), six (6) or seven (7) and return to school on day eight (8) with a negative test result and no symptoms of illness. The student/staff member can return to school without a COVID-19 test on day 11 (after a 10-day quarantine) with no symptoms of illness.

  2. If a student/staff member is identified as a close contact at school, parents will be notified, in writing of a “school close contact.” Parents/guardians can choose the course of action. Students will not be required to quarantine.

WORKPLACE PROTOCOL

Workplace protocols will continue during the next school year and may be amended time-to-time under the discretion of the District Administrator and/or Board of Education as COVID-19 guidance and recommendations continue to evolve and/or circumstances dictate as appropriate to the risk involved.  Teachers and bus drivers must continue to have seating charts for classrooms and school buses in order to identify close contacts.

SANITATION & HYGIENE

District employees are expected to continue to use best practices for personal hygiene as
recommended by the Center of Disease Control CDC) including:

  • Washing hands with soap and water as it is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. Hand sanitizer may be used when hand washing with soap and water is not possible but should not be substituted when hand washing is possible.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth, and face coverings with unwashed hands.

  • Continue to clean/disinfect frequently touched surfaces throughout the day.

There may be particular positions where the essential functions of the position require the employee to have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In such circumstances, the district shall provide such PPE to those employees.
Parents and employees who have questions on students returning to school following a COVID-19 related absence or questions on quarantining, should contact Kristin Clemmer, the School District Nurse at 715-364-7104.

SPECIAL NOTE

This plan will continue for all schools in the School District of Maple unless COVID cases within the schools indicate a spike in positive cases or an order from the county level in which case the Board of Education will reconvene to determine the course of action. Dr. Croney has the authority to close school in the case of an emergency.
