NHS Activities Round-up: May 2024
Band
The NHS Concert Band finished the year strong with their performance at the NMS & NHS Band Pops Concert as well as the 2024 NHS Commencement.
The pep band will perform at the Iron River Blueberry Festival Parade in July and then students will start the year gearing up for the Bayfield Apple Festival Parade.
Choir
Concert Choir and choir seniors performed at the Graduation Ceremony. They had the opportunity to be conducted by Michael Fuchs from UWS! Now, all groups have wrapped up and are excited for next year!
DECA
Josie Kreuser represented Northwestern High School at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California this April. She did DECA-mazing!
FCA
Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets every Fri. morning at 7:30 in Room 3058. Our leaders are Jenna Hursh, Lawson Burkhart, Ashlyn Sutherland and Addison Hanson.
Breakfast treats are served! Everyone is welcome - you do NOT have to be an athlete. Congratulations to our leaders for next year! We are excited to have Payton Orme, Reagan Eberhardt and Morgan Martens join in the fun with Ashlyn and Addison. Our last FCA Huddle Group will be Fri., May 31. NES Mentors
The students at NES are so grateful for our NHS Mentors! We are so proud of each of our NHS students who commit to one AA time per week to befriend an NES student. Communication and commitment are the keys to a successful mentoring relationship. Thank you NHS students for staying true to the purpose of mentoring. Please check with your Cooperating Teacher as this time of year is VERY busy at NES with program and field trips. Special thanks to our seniors! If you are interested in being a mentor for the upcoming school year, please listen to announcements in the fall. Thank you to all who took time to make a difference in the life of an NES student.
SADD
The Students Against Destructive Decisions are working on a couple of different school-wide initiatives. One of your SADD leadership teams handed out bracelets that promote mental well-being. Thank you to that group of students who took time to promote this worthy concept.
Trap Club
The spring 2024 season is almost complete with just our fun night and State Tournament left. We are in Division 2, Conference 3. The state tournament is in Rome WI on June 9th. Wish us luck!

NHS Activities Round-up: April 2024
Yearbook
Yearbooks will be distributed to students in two weeks: on Wednesday, May 15 (seniors), and Thursday, May 16 (underclassmen), during both lunches.
If you have not ordered a yearbook yet and would like to, please either visit Jostens to order one or fill out an order form (found in the office) and submit payment to the office by Friday, May 10, to get your student’s name on the reserved yearbook list. Otherwise, there may be extras yearbooks available on the distribution days, if you want to send money to school to pay for it then.
The price is $75. As of April 30, there were around 50 yearbooks still available for purchase.
Also available for purchase on distribution days will be autograph sections ($5) and clear covers ($5).
Art Club and Visual Arts Classic Team
The Visual Arts Classic Team participated in their state meet virtually rather than at UW-Madison on March 25 due to weather. The team, made up of Jordan Downey, Alex Essen, Hailey Finckler, Claire Germano, Sophie Navarro, Iva Jukic, Shyanne Xiong, Claire Massier, Sasha Rowan, Francesca Germano, Ellie Hanson, and Maria Wiita claimed eleven first-place medals, nine second-place medals, and one third-place medal.
The Art Club hosts the Senior Art Show the week of April 29-May 3 in the high school commons. In addition, on May 10, the Art Club will be putting on the Annual Art Auction and Show. This event will be held in the library with silent auction bidding running from 5:30-7:25 PM.
Band

A few band students are also preparing for the WSMA District Solo & Ensemble festivals at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.
Choir
Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers, Wolf Pack, and some soloists are preparing for State Solo and Ensemble in Eau-Claire, WI on Saturday, May 4th. All Groups are busy working on their Pops Concert music. That concert is Friday, May 10th at 7:30pm.
FCA

FORENSICS
The NHS Forensics Team traveled to DeForest on April 20 for the state tournament. Senior Linnea Smith received a bronze medal for her poetry piece as did Junior Josh Hanson for his informative speech. Junior Tebogo Anderson received a silver medal for his special occasion speech, as did the interpretive reading group made up of junior Francesca Germano and sophomores Hailey Gilderman and Claire Germano. Seniors Anneke Hoegen received a gold medal for solo acting as did senior Mateo Stauffenecker for his poetry piece. Their coaches were very proud and look forward to next season.

One of your SADD leadership teams is working on Mental Health Awareness activities during the month of May. We do these projects to remind students of the importance of making choices that will promote healthy mind and body.
Trap Club
The spring 2024 season is underway with week 1 of competition under our belts. We are in Division 2, Conference 3, where we took 5th place this week.

Band
The NHS Concert Band has begun working on music for this year's Band Pops Concert. The NHS Jazz Band recently performed at the Coffee House Concert on April 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD4riMGRbX4). Several band students are also preparing for the WSMA District Solo & Ensemble festivals at Ashland High School and Superior High School.

Vocal Jazz is busy preparing for the Coffee House concert April 2 at 7:30. Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers, Satis Stella, Wolf Pack, and some soloists and duets are preparing for District Solo and Ensemble in Ashland, WI on Saturday, April 6. They will be competing for metals in their categories as well as an opportunity to advance on to the State Competition in Eau Claire. Concert Choir is busy working on their Pops Concert music which is Friday, May 10th at 7:30pm.
DECA

Half of the busy forensics team competed in district competition in Drummond on Wednesday, March 27. Students competed in categories including poetry, solo acting, informative speaking, moments in history, dramatic interpretation, and special occasion speaking. Due to their involvement in other activities at school, the other half of the forensics team will be competing in the virtual district competition next week. State competition is to be held in DeForest later this April, and several competitors have qualified to compete there.

The Northwestern High School Concert Band also received a rating of 1 on a scale of 1 to 4 from all three judges for a composite score of 1 (Excellent). This is the highest rating an ensemble can receive.

THIS BENEFICIAL ONE-HOUR WORKSHOP WILL EXPLORE WHAT RESILIENCE IS AND WHY IT IS SO ESSENTIAL FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. ALL TOPICS COVERED WILL BE BASED ON THE MOST UP-TO-DATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, FROM THE FIELDS OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, NEUROSCIENCE, AND POSITIVE EDUCATION. RESILIENCE TRAINING IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO LEARN NEW STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH AT A TIME WHEN LOOKING AFTER OUR MENTAL HEALTH HAS NEVER BEEN MORE CRUCIAL. PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ARE THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR THIS TRAINING.

Art Club and the Visual Arts Classic Team
The Visual Arts Classic Team claimed another Regional Championship on Friday, February 23. The team crushed their opponents in Quiz Bowl with thirteen more correct answers than the next closest team. In addition, they took first place in the team Critical Thinking competition. As individuals, members of the team racked up 22 first place ribbons and 2 second place ribbons with their Long Term and On Site projects. The entire group will head to Madison to compete at State on March 25! Members of the team include seniors Jordan Downey, Alex Essen, Hailey Finckler, Iva Jukic, Sasha Rowan, Francesca Germano, and Maria Wiita; sophomore Claire Germano; and freshmen Sophie Navarro, Shayanne Xiong, Claire Massier, and Ellie Hanson.
Band
The NHS Concert Band recently participated in the WSMA Concert Festival hosted by NHS on Wednesday, February 21. They received top scores from all three judges to earn a “First Division Award”. In addition, they recently performed at the Spring Concert on Thursday, February 29. The NHS Pep Band has finished their basketball season playing at basketball games and the NHS Sports Band made a reappearance at the end of February.

The forensics team traveled to Washburn High School for three rounds of subdistrict competition on February 13. Students competed in categories including poetry, solo acting, informative speaking, moments in history, dramatic interpretation, and special occasion speaking. All competitors received positive and constructive feedback and are diligently working on improving their pieces and speeches for the upcoming district competition in Drummond on March 25.
